Type 1 vs. Type 2 Hypervisors: What's the Difference?
Hypervisors provide several benefits to the enterprise data center -- but what kind should you choose? Watch to learn the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 hypervisors, and their respective pros and cons.
A hypervisor isolates operating systems and apps from the computer hardware, so the underlying host machine can independently operate one or more virtual machines, or VMs. The primary types of hypervisor are Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 hypervisors are deployed directly atop the system's hardware without any underlying operating systems or other software, the most common kind of hypervisor for enterprise data centers. Type 2 hypervisors run as a software layer atop a host operating system and are most often found on endpoints like PCs.
The main difference between Type 1 and Type 2 hypervisors is that Type 1 runs on bare metal and Type 2 runs on top of an OS, and have their fair share of pros and cons as well.
What kind of hypervisor do you use in your virtual environment, and why? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to hit that like button.
